Last saturday (01-09-2007) we arrived by airplane at Amsterdam airport early in the morning. This is sadly the end of an incredible adventure!

Afgelopen zaterdag (01-09-2007) zijn we na een lange vlucht 's ochtends in Nederland aangekomen. Het is weer een ongelovelijk avontuur geweest!

Arrived in Darwin...!

After 4220 km we've finally arrived at Darwin. Yeah!!!
Now we'll be relaxing in Darwin; do some sightseeing in and around darwin. We've four days left before our flight leaves for home.
It's extremely warm here and with everything we do we sweat a lot, so we try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.
It has been an incredible beautiful and great cycling trip!

Na 4220 km zijn we in Darwin aangekomen. Yeah!!!
We gaan nu lekker ontspannen in Darwin; we gaan wat rondkijken in en rondom Darwin. We hebben nu nog 4 dagen voordat onze vlucht naar huis vertrekt.
Het is hier gigantisch warm en bij bijna elke actie lopen we flink te zweten, dus we proberen zo veel mogelijk in de schaduw te blijven.
Het is een ongelovelijke mooie en geweldige fietstocht geweest!

We're on the last stretch to Darwin. Now most days we have the wind in our back, and are going well. It's now too warm in the afternoon to cycle, so we start early in the morning at 7 o'clock and finish our cycling day before 2 o'clock in the afternoon just before it's really getting hot.
We met some cyclists on the way, which were all going south; Swiss, South-African, French and Australian. So we're not the only ones cycling the Stuart Highway.
On the way we visited some nice hot spring at Mataranka, The Cutta Cutta Caves and we went canoeing in the Katherine Gorge.

We zijn nu op het laatste stuk naar Darwin. We hebben nu de meeste dagen de wind in de rug en we gaan daardoor behoorlijk snel. Het is nu hier te warm om 's middags te fietsen, dus beginnen we de fietsdag vroeg in de ochtend om 7:00 uur en stoppen we voor 14:00 uur, net voordat het echt heet begint te worden.
We hebben enige fietsers onderweg ontmoet, die allemaal naar het zuiden onderweg waren: Zwitser, Zuid-Afrikaan, Fransman en Australier. Dus we zijn niet de enige die op de Stuart Highway fietsen.
Onderweg hebben we de "Hot Spring" in Mataranka bezocht (lekker zwemmen), de Cutta Cutta grotten verkend en we hebben kano gevaren in the Katherine Gorge.

We're in Tennant Creek now and only about 1000 km left for we reach Darwin. After Alice Springs we passed the Highest Point of the Stuart Highway (731 m.). And we also crossed the Tropic of Capricorn. We also visited the very spectacular Devils Marbles; very nice!
We even met another cyclist on the Stuart Highway. This Japanese cyclist was cycling from Darwin to Adelaide.
Everything is going well. The wind is not completely blowing in our favour, but we still are getting a good average speed.

We zijn nu in Tennant Creek en we hoeven nog maar ongeveer 1000 km voordat we Darwin bereiken. Na Alice Springs zijn we het hoogste punt (731 m.) van de Stuart Highway gepasseerd. Ook zijn we de steenbokskeerkring gepasseerd en zijn we nu in de "tropen". We hebben ook de ontzettend indrukwekkende Devils Marbels bezocht; ronde keien door weer en wind gevormd; erg mooi!
We hebben zelfs een andere fietser op de Stuart Highway ontmoet. Deze Japanse fietser was onderweg van Darwin naar Adelaide.
Alles gaat goed. De wind blaast niet echt in ons voordeel, maar we weten toch een redelijke gemiddelde snelheid te halen.

Many things have happened since we left Curtin Springs. Our next stop on our route was Kings Canyon. Here we did the Rim Walk (6 km), which was very nice and gave us incredible views.
After this we went onto the Mereenie Loop Road (for which a permit of 2.20 dollar p.p. was required). This was a very bad road with a lot of corrugations. We only did an average of about 10 km/h for the most part of this road (198 km). There was also a very strong headwind while cycling east towards Alice Springs. From Hermannsburg we're on sealed road again and climbing through and across the MacDonnell Ranges into Alice Springs. Now there are "only" about 1500 km left to get to Darwin.

Er is veel gebeurt sinds we Curtin Springs verlaten hebben. Onze volgende stop op de route was Kings Canyon. Hier hebben we de Rim Walk (6 km) gedaan, wat erg mooi was om te doen en ons een paar spectaculaire uitzichten opleverde. Hierna gingen we de Mereenie Loop Road op (hiervoor is een vergunning van 2.20 dollar nodig). Dit was een erg slechte weg met heel veel wasbordweg. We deden ongeveer 10 km/uur voor het grootste gedeelte van deze weg (198 km). We hadden dan ook nog een erg harde tegenwind terwijl we naar het oosten richting Alice Springs fietsten. Vanaf Hermannsburg waren we weer op asfalt en klommen we door en over de macDonnell Ranges Alice Springs binnen. Nu hebben we nog "maar" ongeveer 1500 km te gaan voor we Darwin bereiken.

We're back in Curtin Springs. Yes, we're here the second time. Now on our way back from visiting Uluru and on our way now to Kings Canyon. At Uluru (we stayed at Yulara) we stayed two days; first we visited The Olga's (very big boulder like mountains and very impressive). This was a return trip of 115 km (from Yulara) in one day. The second day we cycled to and around Uluru (about 60 km return trip from Yulara). We made many nice pictures of Uluru, which we'll post here on a later date.

We've updated the estimated total distance of our trip to 4300 km, because we had not yet calculated the tour to Kings Canyon and the Mereenie Loop Road within the old estimation.

We zijn weer terug in Curtin Springs. Ja, we zijn hier al eerder geweest op de heenreis naar Uluru. We hebben Uluru bezocht en zijn nu op weg naar Kings Canyon. Bij Uluru (we verbleven in Yulara) zijn we twee dagen gebleven; De eerste dag hebben we The Olga's bezocht (grote rond vormige heuvels en erg impossant om te zien). Dit was een heen-en-terug-reis van 115 km (vanaf Yulara) binnen 1 dag. De volgende dag zijn we naar en om Uluru heen gefietst (ongeveer 60 km heen er terug vanaf Yulara). We hebben vele schitterende foto's van Uluru genomen, deze zullen we later hier nog toevoegen.

We hebben de verwachte totaal-fietsafstand aangepast naar 4300 km. Dit omdat we de afstand naar Kings Canyon en de Mereenie Loop Road nog niet in de oude totaal afstand hadden meegenomen.

We've arrived in Erldunda; the crossroad of the Stuart Highway with the road towards Uluru (aka "Ayers Rock"), the Lasseter Highway. We're a bit unlucky, because since Marla, we've only had a strong headwind, and had to do a lot of hard cycling to get this far. But we've made it! We've crossed the state border and left South Australia and cycled into the Northern Territory. At night it has been freezing here in the desert; one night we had ice within our water bottles.

Our equipment is fine; our bicycles are still great, the trailers are functioning perfectly and our tires still have good profiles.

We're still searching for a internet computer with an USB connection, so we can upload our photo's. But till now, we only are able to find internet computers that allow only keyboard input and do not have any USB connection available. Though when we find a computer with USB connection, we will upload many great pictures. Keep watching this page!

We zijn in Erldunda aangekomen; de kruising van de Stuart Highway met de weg naar Uluru (ook wel bekend als "Ayers Rock"), de Lasseter Highway. We hebben niet zo veel geluk met de wind; vanaf Marla hebben we constant een stevige tegenwind gehad, en hebben hard moeten werken/fietsen om zo ver te komen. Maar uiteindelijk hebben we toch al weer heel wat kilometers gefietst. We zijn de state-grens gepasseerd en we hebben South Australia verlaten en zijn Northern Territory binnen gefietst. 's Nachts vriest het hier midden in de woestijn; Het is ons al eens gebeurt dat het water in onze bidons bevroren was.

Al onze spullen zijn nog in perfecte conditie; Onze fietsen zijn super, de trailers werken perfect en de banden hebben nog steeds een goed profiel.

We zijn nog steeds op zoek naar een computer die ons de mogelijkheid geeft om onze geweldige foto's te kunnen up-loaden. Maar we vinden tot nu toe alleen computers zonder USB-connectie. Maar op het moment dat we een goede computer vinden, zullen we vele schitterende foto's hier plaatsten. Hou daarom deze pagina in de gaten!

Arrived in Marla...

We completed the ride across the Oodnadatta Track (650 km of dirt road) and we're now in Marla. Tomorrow we start on the Stuart Highway traveling north. The dirt road from Oodnadatta was very sandy and dusty, so we were very glad to be able to take a hot shower here at Marla. We saw many kangaroos during our cycling days.

Thanks to all people who have added a comment to our posts. We really love to read those messages!

We heben de fietstocht over de Oodnadatta Track voltooid (650 km gravelweg) en we zijn nu in Marla aangekomen. Morgen zullen verder naar het noorden fietsen over de Stuart Highway. De gravelweg vanaf Oodnadatta was erg zanderig en stoffig, dus we waren blij dat we een lekkere hete douche konden nemen hier in Marla. We hebben veel kangaroes gezien onderweg.

Alle mensen die een berichtje bij deze postjes hebben gezet, bedankt! We vinden het werkelijk leuk om deze berichtjes te ontvangen en te lezen.

Arrived at Oodnadatta

Finally a message from us!!! We tried to post a new message 6 days ago in Marree, before going on to the Oodnadatta Track. But the Internet Center there was kept closed. But now we're in Oodnadatta, 440 km on the track.
We're in good health and are doing well. We're already get a nice tan driving in the desert sun.
We have stood (and driven) on the lowest point of Australia (12 meters below sea level); South Lake Eyre. A dried up lake with a salt crust. We cycled along the Old Ghan Railway, whereby we see many ruins and old railway bridges.
We also went into the natural spa (29 degrees Celcius) at Coward Springs and we saw the famous Mound Springs (the Bubbler).
Along the track the road gets worse the father we get (much wash-board road). At the bad spots of the road we can only get an average of 13 km/h.
We expect the end of the Oodnadatta track in 3 days; that will be the village Marla.
We meet a lot of friendly people on the track; a lot of waving and honking when the cars pass us by. Some even stop to make a small talk with us.

We cannot upload any pictures here at Oodnadatta. We'll try to do this as soon as possible.

Eindelijk een berichtje van ons!!! We hebben nog geprobeerd een berichtje te posten 6 dagen geleden in Marree, net voordat we de Oodnadatta Track op zouden gaan. Maar het internet-centrum in Marree bleef gesloten. Maar nu zijn we in Oodnadatta aangekomen, 440 km op de track.
We zijn in goede gezondheid en alles gaat goed. We krijgen al een lekker kleurtje van het fietsen onder de woestijnzon.
We hebben op het laagste punt van Australie (12 meter onder de zeespiegel) gestaan (en gefietst); South Lake Eyre. Een drooggevallen meer met een zouten laag er op. We fietsten langs de oude Ghan Railroad, hierbij zien we veel ruines en oude spoorwegbruggen.
We hebben ook genoten van de natuurlijke spa (29 graden Celcius) in Coward Springs en zagen de bekende Mound Springs (de Bubbler).
Op de track wordt de weg steeds slechter (veel wasbord-weg). Bij de slechte stukken kunnen we maar een gemiddelde halen van 13 km/uur.
We denken dat we het eind van de track in de volgende drie dagen zullen halen. We zullen dan in het dorpje Marla aankomen.
We onmoeten veel vriendelijke mensen onderweg; er wordt veel gezwaaid en getoeterd als de auto's ons passeren. Sommige mensen stoppen zelfs om even een praatje te maken.

We kunnen hier in Oodnadatta geen foto's plaatsen. Dit zullen we zo spoedig mogelijk doen.

After a week here a update from our travels through Australia. We've had some very bad weather the first week in Australia; heavy rain and big stormy weather. But now the weather seems to be clearing and we also are already a bit further up north, expecting drier weather. We've seen our first kangaroos also already. And the Australian people are very friendly; they're all waving to us while we're cycling. We're now in Hawker, only two days before we start on the Oodnadatta Track. No worries!!!

Na een week hier eindelijk een update van onze reis door Australie. We hebben echt enig slecht weer hier gehad de eerste week; grote regenbuien en stormen. Maar het weer lijkt nu op te klaren en we zijn nu ook al een stukje naar het noorden opgeschoten, zo we kunnen nu ook droger weer verwachten. We hebben ook al onze eerste kangaroos gezien. En de mensen hier zijn werkelijk heel vriendelijk; iedereen wuift ons toe, terwijl we aan het fietsen zijn! We zijn nu in Hawker, nog maar twee dagen tot we aan de Oodnadatta Track zullen beginnen. No worries!!!

Yesterday we went to Schiphol airport. After standing for at least one and a half hour in a queue we could check in our bicycles. we had 12 kgs to much weight, so we had to pay excess weight (648 Euro). After checking in we also had to stand in queue to get through passport control. We had a small walk to the gate where we immediately could board the 747-400. 15 minutes past 12 we left the ground. After a nice flight we arrived 30 minutes past the original arival time in Kuala Lumpur. Here we took a room to get some more sleep for a few hours. Tonight we take the airplane to Adelaide where we'll arrive tomorrow morning.

Gisteren zijn we vertrokken naar Schiphol. Hier konden we direkt in een lange rij aansluiten. Na tenminste anderhalf uur in deze rij gestaan te hebben konden we onze bagage en onze fietsen inchecken. We hadden wel 12 kg te veel gewicht bij ons. Dit overgewicht moesten we extra betalen (648 euro). Hierna konden we direkt in de volgende rij aansluiten voor de paspoort controle. Na een korte loop naar de gate, konden we direkt aan boord van de 747-400 gaan. Kwart over twaalf verlieten we de Nederlandse grond. Na een vlotte vlucht kwamen we met maar 30 minuten vertraging aan in Kuala Lumpur. Hier namen we een kamer in het transfer hotel on toch nog een paar uurtjes te slapen. Vanavond om 21:50 uur vertrekken we richting Adelaide waar we moprgenochtend zullen aankomen.

Only one day left, before we leave for Australia. This last day we'll pack all our stuff and our bicycles with the trailers. Invitations have been sent to everyone to follow the progress of our trip on this site (I hope that I did not forget to send to anyone), so welcome to everyone! Thank you for all the best wished for our trip that we received!

As promised we'll try to keep this site updated (with photo's and stories) while traveling through the outback of Australia.

Here below you'll find a picture which was taken two years back, while we're traveling through North America, by Mike Vermeulen on the Dalton Highway in Alaska.

Nog maar 1 dag voordat we richting Australie vertrekken. Gedurende deze dag zullen we al onze spullen inpakken. Ook worden dan de fietsen met de trailers in hun kartonnen dozen ingepakt voor het vervoer met het vliegtuig. De uitnodiging om het verloop van de fietstocht te volgen op deze webpagina is ook naar iedereen verstuurt (ik hoop dat ik niemand vergeten ben). Welkom op deze webpagina! Zoals belooft zullen we proberen deze webpagina up-to-date te houden (met foto's en verhalen) terwijl we door de Outback van australie fietsen.

Only two weeks...

Only two weeks left before we depart on our Australia adventure. All preparations have been completed; all required equipment is collected, cardboard boxes for transport by plane of the bicycles and the trailers have been made, t-shirts with our logo and the sponsors have been created, etc. Now the only thing left for us to do is pack it all into our bags and to start the adventure.
Also the few last months we did many training cycling trips, so now we feel that we're in good shape to travel through Australia.

Nog maar twee weken voordat we vertrekken voor het Australie avontuur. We kijken erg uit naar het moment dat we aan onze tocht kunnen beginnen. Alle voorbereidingen zijn nu grotendeels voltooid; all benodigde spullen zijn verzameld, kartonnen dozen voor het vervoer van de fietsen en de trailers met het vliegtuig zijn in elkaar gezet, t-shirts voor onze tocht zijn bedrukt met het logo en de sponsors, etc. Nu hoeven we alleen nog maar de tassen in te pakken en dan kan het avontuur echt beginnen.
Ook hebben we afgelopen maanden flink wat trainingsfietstochten gemaakt, zo dat we nu ook echt het gevoel hebben dat we klaar zijn voor onze tocht door Australie.

Water ... very important!

Welcome to the spring time! Finally the winter is over and we can enjoy the sun on our bikes more. This will make our training trips much more enjoyable. Now it's less then 100 days before we leave for our big cycling adventure through Australia.

When we'll be in Australia, drinking water will be very important. There can be more than 200 km between water points. And to be cycling in the desert without any water is not really an option. So we're trying to be well prepared for this: We bought for ourselves 4 x 6 liter MSR Dromlite waterbags each. So we each will have at least 24 liters of water with us.

This ofcourse also mean that we'll have an additional 24 kilo's to carry with us through the desert. For this we'll use the ExtraWheel trailer. The ExtraWheel company was so good to us to sponsor us with one ExtraWheel for free (see our blog of 01 september 2006).

Welkom in de lente! Eindelijk is de winter voorbij en kunnen we weer meer genieten van de zon op onze fietstochten. Dit maakt onze trainingstochten veel aangenamer. Er zijn nu nog minder dan 100 dagen te gaan voordat we vetrekken voor ons fiets avontuur door Australie.

Wanneer we in Australie zijn, zal drinkwater erg belangrijk zijn. Er kan meer dan 200 km liggen tussen verschillende plekken waar drinkwater te krijgen zal zijn. En om door de woestijn te fietsen zonder drinkwater is niet echt een goed idee. Daarom hebben we dan ook elk 4 x 6 liter MSR Dromlite watertassen aangeschaft. Dit betekend dus dat we beiden minstens 24 liter water bij ons zullen hebben.

Maar dit betekend natuurlijk ook dat we 24 kg extra moeten meesjouwen. Hiervoor zullen we de ExtraWheel trailer gebruiken. Hierdoor ontlasten we de fietsen. Extrawheel was heel erg aardig om ons te sponsoren met 1 gratis Extrawheel trailer (zie de blog van 01 september 2006).

There has passed a long time since our last post on this blog. We've been preparing for the upcomming trip to australia. We got the reservation for our tickets for the flights to and from Australia ready now. We still have to get visa's.

For our trip in Iceland we bought a new tent (because our original tent was not very good anymore after our long cycling trip through North America). But we realy did not like it very much, so we decided to buy another tent.

We found a very nice tent (the Hielo 2 from Mountain Equipement) at the Zwerkei shop.

"A ground–breaking new mountaineering tent from Mountain Equipment, the Hielo 2 has been innovatively designed and constructed from the most technical fabrics. This two-man geodesic tent is built to withstand the harshest conditions in the world. The Hielo 2 tent consists of a symmetrical four-pole structure with two identical porches for easy access and quick and efficient pitching. Mountain Equipment has integrated several concepts to produce more effective protection from the elements including snow valances to keep snow out of the porches, and a strong X-Pac bathtub floor with strategic reinforcements and fully taped seams. The Hielo 2’s stability is one of its main strengths and is achieved by specific features such as pole-stabilisers connected to the tent floor, aerodynamic air inlets to reduce wind drag and a D-lock internal guy system integrated into the gear lofts. The tent offers a surprisingly large space for occupants and kit with six internal pockets and three separate gear lofts."

So this seemed to be the perfect tent for us. We'll be trying out the tent when the winter time has passed.

Het heeft even geduurd voordat we weer een bericht hier plaatsen, maar we zijn druk bezig geweest met de voorbereiding van onze tocht door Australie. We hebben nu onze tickets voor de vlucht van en naar Australië geregeld. We moeten nu alleen nog de visa's regelen.

Voor onze tocht door IJsland van afgelopen jaar hadden we een nieuwe tent aangeschaft (onze vorige tent was bij de grote tocht door Noord Amerika gesneuveld). Maar deze tent was toch niet echt een tent die ons beviel. Dus hebben we besloten een andere nieuwe tent aan te schaffen.

Dus dit lijkt voor ons wel een perfecte tent. We zullen de nieuwe tent uitproberen wanneer de winter weer een beetje voorbij is.

Today we received a message from Schwalbe, that they are prepared to sponsor us with free bicycle tires.

The expedition will require a lot of bicycle tires: tires for our bicycles, tires for the trailers and at least one spare tire. This makes a total of 7 bicycle tires. We've been cycling with Schwalbe bicycle tires on many of our cycling trips and always liked these tires. Now Schwalbe has agreed to support us by supplying the bicycle tires. Vandaag ontvingen we een bericht van Schwalbe met de mededeling dat ze bereid zijn om ons te sponsoren met de fietsbanden.

Voor de fietsexpeditie zullen we veel fietsbanden nodig hebben: fietsbanden voor onze fietsen, fietsbanden voor de trailers en ten minste 1 reserve band. Dit brengt het totaal van benodigde banden op 7. Tijdens onze tochten hebben we al vaker op Schwalbe fietsbanden gefietst en zijn zeker zeer goede banden gebleken. En nu gaat Schwalbe ons fietsbanden leveren voor onze fietstocht door Australie. Bedankt Schwalbe voor de ondersteuning!

Today we received a message from ExtraWheel, that they are prepared to sponsor us with one free trailer.

For carrying plenty of water and the supplies for the long trip we each required a trailer. This to relieve the bicycles a little bit and spread the load on a larger surface. The ExtraWheel trailer is an unique trailer: It rolls on a single 26" wheel, similar to the ones on the bicycles. That means one length of spokes, same tires and other parts, not mentioning traction advantages of large 26" wheel compared to tiny 16" of most other trailers. ExtraWheel is able to handle a load of up to 30 kg and despite steel construction weights less than 5 kg, what makes it the lightest single wheel trailer on the market.

Voor het vervoeren van genoeg water en onze bagage kunnen we mooi een aanhangwagentje gebruiken. Dit om zo te zorgen dat de fietsen niet te zwaar belast worden en het gewicht beter te verdelen. De ExtraWheel trailer is een heel aparte en unieke trailer: Het heeft een normaal 26" fietswiel. Dit betekend dat we dezelfde reserve spaken en banden hiervoor kunnen gebruiken tijdens onze tocht. Ook scheelt dit in de rolweerstand ten opzichte van andere trailers die een wiel van maar 16" gebruiken. De ExtraWheel kan tot 30 kg dragen en ondanks een stalen constructie weegt hij maar 5 kg, en dit maakt dat dit de lichtste trailer is die op dit moment te krijgen is.
